The View from My Place (My weekly meditation)
“In paths they do not know I will guide them. I will make darkness into light before them and rugged places into plains. These are the things I will do, and I will not leave them undone” (Isaiah 42:16).
The path the Lord identifies in this passage is one of darkness and rugged terrain. It’s not a path we would choose to be on. The miracle that is highlighted is in what the Lord does on that dreary road. He turns it into light. He turns it into a plain.
All of us desire smooth paths and no unpleasant surprises, but that is simply not how life works. So, when an unexpected and undesirable stretch of our journey arrives, the Lord wants to use it to give us a fresh experience of His glory. Many of us can affirm that some of the greatest blessings of our lives have appeared in some of the most unlikely of places. People we have met. Opportunities that have unfolded. Personal growth. Dangers we have avoided. That is not coincidence; it is grace.
Ultimately, the safest and most rewarding path to travel is the road of Trust. We have every reason to expect great things, not because of the certainty of the path but because of the unchanging love, power and faithfulness of our Guide.
