For many of us, our spiritual journey may include meditating on Bible verses, taking notes during sermons, keeping a journal or committing Scripture to memory. But as we grow older, many of us are either becoming better acquainted with our own diminishing mental faculties or are dealing with loved ones who are in the throes of it. Thus, we may fear that perhaps our relationship with Christ will also diminish. With Jesus, nothing could be farther from the truth. For those of us who know Jesus Christ, there is so much more to the story than meets the mind.
Jesus said, God is Spirit. He did not say God is “mind.” Yes, we have the mind of Christ, but the thoughts of Christ are communicated by the indwelling Holy Spirit and applied not just to our minds but also directly to our spirits. That means even though a believer’s mental issues may affect their human relationships, their spiritual relationship with Christ not only remains intact, but it can also continue to flourish. “Though outwardly we are [physically and mentally] wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16).
He or she may not be able to communicate it to others, and it may not be apparent to others looking on, but no one knows what is happening in the spirit of a person but the One who is Spirit. Jesus called Lazarus, who was actually dead, by name and Lazarus heard Him and came forth from the tomb. So, that same Jesus is certainly not restricted in His communication to us by any mental limitation. The One who promised to never leave us will forever be with our spirit no matter what our state of mind may be.
