My wife celebrated another birthday a couple days ago. But no matter how many years we celebrate together, no matter how well I think I know her, she still manages to put me on my heels or on my toes. Something she says makes me twist my mouth, furrow my brow, or spit out my coffee. Something she does causes my jaw to drop or makes me slowly sink into my chair, scratch my head or emphasize every word of “No. You. Didn’t.” It’s her spirit. The mystery of her person. I call it her “something-else-ness.”
In the same way, no matter how many years we celebrate our relationship with the Lord, He still mystifies us, fascinates us, “wows” us, brings us to tears or just leaves us slack-jawed. We find ourselves saying things like, “I know that wasn’t a coincidence.” Or, “Look at God!” Or, as a couple members of the church staff said during our weekly meeting yesterday, “Pastor, you have to stop bugging our homes for sermon content.” I didn’t bug their homes. The Lord did! He is always up to something. It’s not always big things. In fact, it’s mostly small things that become big things just because He lets us know they are from Him. He is the Creator not just by title but because He’s always creating. And He is full of surprises.
He displays His wonders and just as quickly they disappear. And like Jacob we find ourselves saying, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”
