Yes, the Lord wants us to be “the best version of ourselves” as it is commonly phrased today, but there is something even better He wants us to become. He wants us to become more attracted to Him than anything else we can achieve, possess, or even become.
When David sought the Lord for “one thing,” he asked to “behold the beauty of the Lord” (Psalm 27:4-6). The realization of the beauty of who the Lord is can take us farther than our own efforts to “become,” and it also enriches our “becoming.” We become the best version of ourselves beyond our limited vision of it to how God designed it.
Our natural, human inclination is always towards gaining more control of our lives. But beholding the beauty of the Lord is not something we can control; it is something we receive. Therefore, the process of gaining it becomes a disincentive. We just don’t want to wait for it or persist in asking. Furthermore, in our do-it-yourself culture, “asking the Lord” seems to many people nothing more than an antiquated tradition or superstition. But, speaking personally, becoming enthralled with His beauty has richly blessed my “becoming” and is more than worth the asking.
