June is my birthday month and to celebrate I’m planning to take a moment each day to enjoy a small “treat.” Yesterday, as I was pondering what would be my first choice, I went out to get the mail and, as if right on cue, there was a handmade birthday card from one of our precious church members. Inside the card was a simple string bracelet with a silver plate that read “I am a child of God. 1 John 3:1.” (The verse referenced reads, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are!”)
What a perfect kickoff for the month, to begin it with a reminder that I already have been given the best give there is. It’s the best because whatever grand and glorious concepts of love we may have, or whatever human demonstrations of it in word or deed, or that have been captured in music or movies, the love of God surpasses it. It goes beyond human knowledge and imagination. Beyond our knowledge of our own love needs and beyond our imagination of how they can best be met. His love is not merely sentimental, it is relentless, unfading and precisely tailored for each of us.
So, to commemorate and celebrate being a beloved child of God, I plan to wear the bracelet every day for the entire month, and as I take time each day to reflect on it, it will enrich any other treat that is added to it. His love is the gift that makes all other gifts better!
