So, I’m thinking about one of the most well-known verses in the Bible, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). It’s a promise that often leads us to thinking about the future “good” that God has planned and is working out. But we can only live in the present, and our present was once the future we were trusting God to work out for good. Our present life is an expression of “the good” that God has brought forth from “all things” of our past. In other words, not only is God’s goodness awaiting us in the future, but it is also on display in our life now. We are living in the “good” right now. Is it perfect? No. “Good” is not utopia. It is not our ideal life. At any time, it may be pleasant or challenging. It is in the best of times and in the worst of times. Whatever its appearance, it is the every-moment product of God’s unchanging and unfathomable love for us combined with His all-wise and eternal purposes. The details change from day to day, but the “good” is here now and forever.
