“The Lion King” is coming back to Washington D.C. next month. In case you are unfamiliar with the story or have forgotten some of the details, Lion King, Mufasa, and his mate, Sarabi, have a cub whom they name Simba. Simba is heir to the throne and he “just can’t wait to be king.” He’s a good cub but he’s rambunctious and mischievous. Knowing this about his son, King Mufasa appoints a guardian, a parrot named Zazu to keep an eye on Simba. Zazu warns Simba to stay away from danger and reports to Mufasa when matters get out of control.
Here comes the spiritual point.
In different ways, we’re all like Simba. So, God has appointed a guardian for us like Zazu – only better. Infinitely better! Unlike Zazu, our Guardian doesn’t fly above us or before us; He lives inside of us. He isn’t a spy; He’s a friend and companion. He not only warns us of danger, but He also empowers us to defend ourselves. He doesn’t just nudge us away from mischief; He tutors us in the royal ways of the kingdom and educates us about our heritage. He coaches us and cheers us up. He can do all this, and so much more, because He is not just a servant appointed by God, He is the Spirit of God. And as fellow heirs of Christ we are blessed with the instruction to “follow the Spirit.” He is our Father King’s personal gift to each of us.
