“The Light” by Thaddus Fitch.
Webster’s Dictionary, defines fear as, “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.”
As a child, each night I slept with the bathroom light, across the hallway of my bedroom, on. Tightly tucked into bed with my Spider-Man blanket, along with my trusty and worn Thunder-Cat sword. At my bedside, a complement of my best toy soldiers encamped about my room in attack formation. We lay in wait, ready, anticipating anything that might go bump in the night. “How would this night end?”, I’d say to myself.
The day would break and there would be nothing. No battle during the night, just mom, standing at the doorway, letting me know, “breakfast is ready.”
Years later, I realized the creaking sounds in the night were from the settling of that old house, often the result of changes in temperature and humidity throughout the day. Michigan was known for its hot-humid summers and harsh winters.
We’ve all experienced moments of fear. Whether it’s the fear of death, a diagnosis of an illness, an unexpected job change, when relationships end or when global catastrophes seem to be real “End Times” events. Fear is a natural human response to the unknown and events we cannot control.
But for the believer, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment, The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18 NIV).
That perfect love is only experienced through an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ, the One who is the author and finisher of our faith, and who calms all our fears. When we trust in the love and grace of our heavenly Father, it results in peace, hope, joy, and comfort in all our circumstances and situations. As when the darkness of night gave way to the light of day and relieved the fears of that little boy, so the light of our Lord exposes all the tricks and lies of the evil one and brings reassurance to us.
