In this last “View” of the year, I want to highlight a portion of Mr. Grinch’s story.
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?”
The “little bit more” the Grinch pondered was perhaps the magical notion that the true essence of Christmas is found in the twinkling treasures of love, community, joy, and gratitude. These are the gifts, the Who’s down in Whoville were singing about. Gifts that cannot be bought or wrapped but are tucked away in the cozy corners of our hearts. But wait, there’s an even more precious gift hidden in the true essence of Christmas —it’s the One who is the Source of these radiant qualities, the One whose birth the day commemorates.
May the joy we’ve gathered like precious ornaments from all the blessings of this year be a star that leads us, like the Magi, to worship Him. And above all, may we open our hearts to embrace the gift He was born to give us through His death and resurrection—eternal life!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a sparkling night!
