The View From My Place – “The Magic Man in the Sky”

October 13, 2021 By Dan Baty Leave a Comment

As I was briefly watching a nighttime drama, one of the characters mockingly referred to God as “some magic man in the sky.” I have heard people say such things in real life and it stings because they are talking about my Savior and my Friend.

For the record, God is Spirit. He is not the wind but He is like the wind. You cannot see it but you know it is there by its effects and by your personal experience of it. People who think God is a “magic man in the sky,” a sort of glorified Santa Claus, simply don’t understand the picture. After His resurrection, Jesus physically appeared to more than 500 people at one time. After showing Himself alive over a period of 40 days, so His disciples would be sure they weren’t imagining Him, He then ascended above the clouds, right before their eyes. We do not know how high. He may have disappeared into another realm or dimension that is just above or parallel to earth, though invisible. We don’t know exactly where heaven is but nowhere in the Bible does it say God is sitting up in the sky among the clouds. So people who say such things make a mockery of what they do not understand.

Yet, not even the best explanation, the most powerful testimony nor the strongest proof will satisfy someone determined not to believe. Jesus Himself said such a person “will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead” (Luke 16:31). So I was reminded, it is only grace that opens our eyes to see Jesus for who He truly is: “The living one who was dead and is now alive forevermore” (Revelation 1:18). Subtract His grace from the equation of my own beliefs and God would be “some magic man in the sky” to me as well.
