I tend to treat helpful spiritual insights like emergency rations – collecting them, labeling them, storing them away so I’ll be ready for whatever comes. And God has used that instinct to abundantly bless me and many others in our journey with Christ. Holding onto what God has shown us matters. Remembering His faithfulness, treasuring His words, keeping track of the ways He’s met us – these are valuable resources in our quest to grow deeper in our relationship with the Lord.
But even this good instinct can slide into something that is actually counterproductive to growing closer to the Lord; it can redirect our trust. When we treat any spiritual practice as if it is our superpower, or the secret sauce of our stability or success, we’ve wandered off the path of enjoying security in Him.
The truth is, His presence and vigilant care have been the quiet thread running through every chapter of my life. He has been the difference. He provided the resources, gave them the power to influence me, gave me eyes to see them, and the heart to receive them. Because of that, I don’t have to treat insights or any spiritual practices as if they’re my lifeline. I can apply them while keeping my dependence upon the Lord. In other words, using the method but relying on the Master.
God has boldly promised to be present with me always and to supply all my needs. He is the unchanging, eternal Source of everything I have and everything I will ever need. And when the Source is secure, I can be secure too.
“For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13).
