The View from My Place – “The Pointers”

May 20, 2020 By Dan Baty Leave a Comment

From my journal from yesterday… “Me? I’m just an announcer. A simple MC. The headliner is Jesus. My job is to say, “And now, here He is! The Person we’ve all been waiting for!” and then let the spotlight fall on Him. If He doesn’t come through the curtains, I look like a fool standing there. That’s my ministry.”

Indeed, that was also the ministry of John the Baptist. “I am a voice crying in the wilderness…” he said. And then again, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” The apostle Paul said, “We do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus.” And the iconic gospel artist Walter Hawkins put it like this: “I have a Friend indeed, one who supplies my every need. Follow me I’ll show you the way. He’ll turn your darkness into day. Follow me. I’ll point you to Jesus.”

That, in a nutshell, is the ministry of every Christian: A pointing ministry.

Around 1528, Martin Luther penned the words, “Did we in our own strength confide our striving would be losing.” In other words, we have no power to save ourselves. We have no power to save others. We have no power to turn others on to Jesus, nor any power to warm the cold or tepid faith of fellow believers. All we can do is point.

But thank God He does come through the curtain of every single heart of every single person who sincerely seeks Him. Not always on our cue, but always in His perfect timing.
