Yesterday, I received a gift in the mail from an anonymous source. (Whoever you are, thank you!). It was a wall hanging bearing the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, “All who wander are not lost.” I meditated much on it this morning and here is what resulted. I called it “The Road Less Obvious,”
Not all who wander are lost.
Faith isn’t always fast food.
Or instant oatmeal.
Sometimes it’s slow-cooked,
a stew of questions,
quiet trust,
and holy seasoning.
Wandering is not always straying.
Sometimes it’s being led through the wilderness,
like Moses,
like Hagar,
like Jesus Himself.
To wander with God is to trust
that even when the scenery changes,
the promise holds.
Even when the next step is unclear,
the One who calls us forward is faithful.
So, if today feels like wandering,
take heart.
You are neither lost nor alone.
You are being led through mystery.
And the One who began the journey with you
will see it through to completion.
All who wander are not lost.
