What do you do when ugly memories of your past come calling; something you said or did that you wish for all the world you could take back? Sometimes it’s a visit for a fleeting moment. Other times it may be an overnighter, or at least a part-of-the-nighter. It happens to the best of us and it certainly happens to me.
For those of us in Christ, from a biblical perspective our past is fertile ground for the evil one to launch attacks on our spirit and on the security God wants us to enjoy in our relationship with Him. It is one of the reasons the Bible calls Satan “the accuser of the brethren.”
Here is a helpful counterattack: “Rejoice in the Lord always!” (Philippians 4:4) Rejoice in the Lord’s forgiveness as often as you remember your regrets. Celebrate His redemption as often as you feel your remorse. Let remorse and regret be prompts that lead you to praise God for your status and standing in Christ.
This coming Sunday at our church is Communion Sunday. It is a designated time to remember Christ’s sacrifice for us and why we can stand in the present, unbowed by our past. The cross of Christ is the solution to all of our errors of the past, and it is the only “drop-the-mike” response to those unexpected “visitors” and the evil one’s accusations.
