The View from My Place – “Who Wants What He Has?”

April 29, 2020 By Dan Baty Leave a Comment

This gas station I walk through each morning could be a church for as many lessons it has framed for me. Today was yet another one. Standing and watching a man who was nicely dressed filling up his fine luxury car, reminded me of a story about a man who got a close up view of another man’s life and envied it so much that he killed the man and assumed his life. Great story.

But instead of killing this man, I wondered what would happen if I walked up to him and said, “I want to be part of your life. I just want you to take me in and share what you have with me. Your family, your job, your wealth, your relationships. All of it. I want what you have.”

First of all, the man would probably think I had the corona virus and it had caused me to be totally deranged. Second, he might smile politely just long enough to quickly jump in his car, lock the door and squeal his tires escaping the station. Maybe with the severed pump handle still sticking out of the gas tank.

But that is exactly what the Lord is offering us. To be part of His life. To share everything He has, as fellow heirs. To be part of His work, as partners in the gospel. To enjoy His connections, which is our fellowship with the Father and the Holy Spirit and with other brothers and sisters.  And to enjoy His wealth, the true riches of life that come from trusting in Him.

However, we did not approach Him with such an absurd request. Instead, in what is easily the most incomprehensible expression of extravagant love, He pursued each of us with the offer.  The Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).

He is still offering, to any and everyone who wants what He has.
