Some days I feel like a sheep with a suitcase.
Jesus says, “I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves,” and I nod like I understand, but then I picture myself trotting off with a little rolling bag, trying to look brave while still very much wool-covered and wide-eyed.
It’s a strange assignment. Sheep aren’t known for strategy. We don’t outwit wolves. We don’t form militias. We follow. We graze. We get lost. And yet, He sends us.
Here’s where I get clarity and comfort: “Lo, I am with you always.” That “Lo” is the key. Don’t “go” without remembering the “Lo.” The sending isn’t solo. The going isn’t independent. The Shepherd doesn’t wave from the hillside and wish us luck; He walks with us. He speaks through us. He opens the gates for us.
Even in the “doing,” we’re not the source. “Apart from Me you can do nothing.” That’s not a reprimand; it’s a relief. I don’t have to conjure courage or manufacture wisdom. And in all my going, I just have to stay close.
