For me, junior high school felt like being a single sock tossed in a chaotic pile of mismatches – utterly out of place. It was the worse!
And as life unfolded, that feeling proved to be just an extreme preview of how things would be from then on out. Throughout life, we strive to find our place—to fit in among peers, careers, and communities. Some attempts succeed – at least partially, while others leave us feeling like outsiders, searching for acceptance. But ultimate belonging is not in a particular location or in the approval of any group. It is found in Christ.
Scripture reminds us that from the very beginning we were “called to belong to Jesus Christ” (Romans 1:6) and that we are “no longer strangers and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). There is no “almost” or “partially” about our fit—it is perfect! No human institution or earthly gathering could ever replicate it. Because this belonging does not require us to maintain our status or renew a membership. It doesn’t require us to look a certain way, have certain things or even behave a certain way. It is a belonging that liberates us to be who we were created to be. It is given freely by grace through faith in Christ. That makes it unconditional, personal, and eternal.
This is not a belonging we have to figure out how to fit into. It is the belonging for which we were created. We belong because His Spirit lives in us and “has qualified [us] to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light” (Colossians 1:12). In Him, we are not mismatches—we are chosen, cherished, and perfectly placed.
