I received a letter today that filled me with gratitude – especially on this day before Thanksgiving. In it, the writer reflected on a statement I made in Sunday’s sermon: “I’m not a motivational speaker…I’m here to give guidance.” What follows is an excerpt from their heartfelt response to that truth:
“I never thought of you as a motivational speaker or one who uses enticing words of man’s wisdom to get a point across. After personal reflection, this is the heart of the matter: My interpretation was that you’re not called to entertain us or simply make us feel good. Guidance doesn’t always come wrapped in excitement, emotions, or goosebumps. Often it is reflective, stretching, and revealing. Yet even when it challenges us, it ultimately motivates us to seek the Father’s face as He helps us navigate this journey called life.” – T.F.
I was especially inspired by his understanding that even challenging truth is not intended to shame or burden us, but to escort us into the Father’s presence for help as we navigate this journey. When it comes to enjoying a deeper relationship with Christ, that is an essential truth, because it disarms the evil one’s primary strategy: isolation – disengagement from the Lord and His people at the very time we need them most. This brother’s words show that the message of grace, true transformation, and intimacy with Christ has taken root in his life. And for that, I am deeply thankful.
This Thanksgiving may your heart be filled with His joy as You remember the depth of His care for you.
