“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book” (Psalm 56:8 NLT).
Some tears come with names, like grief, joy, frustration, awe. But others arrive unannounced and silent. They slip down our cheeks without a clear story, stirred by something deep and unspoken. These are the mystery tears.
They might be the ache of longing for something we can’t quite define. Or the quiet release after a moment of unexpected beauty. Or the soul’s response to a truth too big to hold in words.
And yet, they are not mysterious to God.
He knows the source of every tear, even the ones we don’t understand ourselves. He doesn’t ask us to explain them. He simply receives them. Bottles them. Honors them.
Mystery tears are not signs of weakness or confusion. They are blessed evidence that our hearts are still tender. They remind us that though we have been made citizens of heaven, we are still a part of the human experience. That we are relatable and able to relate to others.
Whatever their cause, mystery tears carry a message that often times can be deciphered through prayer by the One before whom everything is laid bare.
