“‘What message does my Lord have for His servant?’ The Commander of the Lord’s army replied, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.’ And Joshua did so” (Joshua 5:14-15).
Before Joshua received any instructions, he was told to take off his sandals. Hold on a moment, Joshua. Take off your sandals and acknowledge who you’re conversing with.
When we pray, we may begin giving thanks and then get into what we need or what we’re facing. But sometimes the Lord wants us to pause and recognize who we’re talking to. “Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly” (Psalm 138:6). He lovingly regards us in our lowly state, but He doesn’t lose His exaltedness. He stoops but He doesn’t shrink. We are both wise and blessed when we remember that He is not just close to us, He is also above all.
This is not the Lord flaunting His majesty; it’s Him escorting us into humility, reminding us that following Him is more than obeying orders. Reverence is not just a prelude to action; it’s the foundation of it.
