Today I’m reflecting on “perfect love” (1 John 4:18), the kind that can only come from above. Scripture says it casts out fear, and I believe that means all fear: fear of punishment, fear of judgment, fear of being misunderstood, dismissed, or overlooked. And whatever other fears may try to linger. Perfect love casts them all out, leaving nothing but the hopeful anticipation of a knowing embrace.
Perfect love also means God loves ME perfectly. Not generically. Not interchangeably. Each day, He sets before me a tailor-made love, fashioned just for me. His love isn’t pulled off the rack. He doesn’t love me as He loves someone else, because I am not someone else. I am uniquely created by Him, and so my love needs, my love language, and my love thresholds are mine. He alone knows them. He alone meets them perfectly.
Ever wonder how some people can wear something you could never get away with? They believe it suits them. And if you believe it, you wear it well. If you don’t, it shows, and it influences how others see it too. The way to wear God’s love well is to believe there is no comparison. No room to boast about being loved more. No need to fear being loved less. We are each loved in our own spotlight of His grace. It’s a love that fits. And like clothing that’s made to measure, it shows when we believe it belongs to us.
Scripture reminds us that there is no favoritism with God, just perfect love for those who trust in Him. It’s made to be worn with joy and confidence.
