Text: 1 John 5:11-13 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Amplified Version: 11 And the testimony is this: God has given us eternal life [we already possess it], and this life is in His Son [resulting in our spiritual completeness, and eternal companionship with Him]. 12 He who has the Son [by accepting Him as Lord and Savior] has the life [that is eternal]; he who does not have the Son of God [by personal faith] does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God [which represents all that Jesus Christ is and does], so that you will know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that you [already] have eternal life.
(Vs. 11) God Has Given Us Eternal Life.
Eternal Life is Now!
- John 5:24 Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
It includes spiritual completeness and eternal companionship. Hope. Joy. Freedom. Peace. Reassurance of love.
- Colossians 2:10. In Him you have been made complete.
- 1 Corinthians 2:12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.
- 2 Peter 1:3 He has granted us everything we need pertaining to life and godliness, through our knowledge of Him..
“We do not draw people to Christ by loudly discrediting what they believe, by telling them how wrong they are and how right we are, but by showing them a light that is so lovely that they want with all their hearts to know the source of it.”
- This is also how we promote growth in believers.
We have a living, and live-in inspiration for today and all the days of our life henceforth.
(Vs. 11) This Life is In His Son.
This life is accessed by faith in the Son, by a personal relationship with Him.
It’s in His Son because the Son paid the price for our sins.
- Isaiah 53 gives details.
- Acts 10:43 – All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
- Matthew 1:21 – “She (Mary) will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, f because he will save his people from their sins.”
- Acts 4:12 – Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
- John 1:29 – John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
- John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”
- John 10:8 All who have come before me (professing to be the Messiah) are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them.
- What did He offer as proof? John 2:19 “Destroy this temple and I will raise it again in three days.”
- John 17:3 – This is eternal life that they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
(Vs. 12) Whoever has the Son Has the Life.
If you have Jesus, You have Life. If you do not have Jesus, you do not have life.
Billy Graham on Johnny Carson. Carson asks, “Do you ever think about death at all? What do you envision after death?” Graham answered, “I envision heaven. I’m not going there because I’ve preached to a lot of people. I’m not going there because I’ve read the Bible? I’m not going there because I’m good. I’m going there because of what Christ did for me on the cross. I’m saved by the grace of God. Now the word grace carries with it the idea that I don’t deserve it. I can’t buy my way. I can’t work my way. I’m a sinner. Just like you. And just like Ed [McMahon].
He who has the Son has the life.
(Vs. 13) Believe So You May Know.
God wants us to be certain. “I write these things to you who believe… so you may know.”
To say “I know for certain I’m going to heaven” is not arrogance or pride. It is faith. It is only pride if it is not based on believing in the Son or relying on our own efforts. It is only pride if is based on our own good works instead of on saying “Yes” to Jesus.
Luke 10:20 Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
God wants us to be worry-free about our passport to heaven. When we say yes to Jesus He stamps it with His blood. That is the only Visa you need and the only one that will be accepted.
